This book is truly mesmerizing. The poetic prose and intervention of statistics makes this book easier to read, considering it is based on a rather dark topic.
The book ‘documents’ the author’s troubles with depression and anxiety. Matt Haig was 24 when he first attempted suicide, and since then his life has been spent battling these demons.
Although the subject matter is somewhat difficult to read about, it is written with such light and understanding that the reader forgets the subject matter is something rather more dense than they realise. Matt Haig is a master with words, weaving sublime metaphors and distinct language together to create a rather special reading experience.
This book is a landmark in young adult literature, and may even have the power to avoid large numbers of deaths in young people due to depression. At the heart of this book is one overriding theme – Hope. Matt never lost hope. Even at his worst, he had someone beside him, reassuring him that there was light at the end of the extremely long tunnel.
All in all, this book is fantastic, and Matt Haig is definitely one of my favorite authors. Highly reccomended.
