Where to start? This book has it all……….. A lovingly reimagined and very detailed world, a kickbutt heroine, cute and interesting sidekicks, and to top it all off, a very evil villain.
Amy Gumm lives in a trailer park somewhere in America. She hates her life, her dad is dead, her mum’s a hardcore alcoholic and the trailer park is a truly disgusting environment to live in.
All Amy wants to do is escape.
One night, a weather report forecasts a violent hurricane in her city. As usual, Amy’s mum still wants to go out and party. Amy takes her mum’s absence as a chance to grab the secret stash of money that’s been building up in a drawer in the kitchen suite of the trailer and plans to get out of town as soon as possible.
Amy’s wish is granted, just not in the way she was expecting…….. As soon as Amy opens the door of the trailer, the forecasted hurricane strikes, taking the trailer and Amy with it.
The hurricane drops the trailer and Amy off in a land she never expected to see, the emerald city. But this isn’t the emerald city she remembers from the books of her childhood. It’s a warped and twisted and scary version, full of dark creatures and even darker people.
Dorothy is stealing magic from the land, and using it to control and manipulate people.
Amy is shocked to see the way a flying monkey is tied up to a post (for the crime of ‘sass’), so she unties him and lets him go free. But this was the wrong decision, and Amy is jailed for her actions.
But help is at hand. She is rescued from prison by Glinda, a witch, who offers Amy the chance to work for ‘The Revolutionary Order Of The Wicked’, a group that is doing everything they can to stop the evil Dorothy from draining the land of all it’s precious magic.
It becomes Amy’s job to go undercover in Dorothy’s castle and to get close to Dorothy. So close that she can kill her.
I thoroughly enjoyed the book, and can’t wait to read the sequel ‘The Wicked Will Rise’.
