Beautiful Creatures Book Review

Posted on October 31, 2012 by Mackenzie Lynd Posted in Books .

Beautiful CreaturesI’m going to tell you right now that I am not with the majority vote on this book. Beautiful Creatures was co-written by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl. I could really tell it was written by two authors. The story itself felt as if it was two different stories. It takes place in a small southern town. It is written in a male point of view. The story follows Ethan Wate. He has been having dreams of a girl. When this girl shows up at his school they become friends but Ethan wants more. Lena is something more than human. When she turns sixteen she will be claimed as a dark or light castor which is like a witch. She is hesitant to get close to anyone with her impending doom as she sees it.

I think my first problem was I went into this book with extremely high expectations. It is a day by day story. There is not a lot of action or romance. I found the characters to be quite whiny. The only character I did like died. It would go back and forth between school life with kids teasing Lena and the paranormal aspect. I would have liked to know more about the whole Castor world and also the civil war flashbacks. I hope in the following books more is explained. If you want a book with more of an everyday feel with a little paranormal to it then I think you would really enjoy it. I personally did not really enjoy this book it took me almost the entire month to finish when I usually read a book in two days.  I gave this book 3/5 star. I think if you know what you are getting into you may enjoy it more.

Sweet Venom Book Review

Posted on October 10, 2012 by Mackenzie Lynd Posted in Books .

Sweet Venom Book CoverSweet Venom is the first book in the Medusa Girls series. I really liked Tera Lynn Childs’ take on Greek mythology. This book in particular focused on Medusa’s descendants. It starts off with two alternating P.O.V. Gretchen is used to getting called out to send the monsters back to their realm. Grace just moved to a new city and starts to see monsters. These two girls end up meeting each other and realizing they are identical. They find out that they are triplets. They find their other sister. Together they have the biggest fate of all. They have to protect the human world, if they can live long enough.

I have always loved Greek myths. Tera changed the story of Medusa and it intrigued me. I wasn’t sure where this series was going to go, truthfully I still don’t. It was pretty fast paced. I liked seeing it from both Grace and Gretchen and later on Greer’s point of view. It was a way to relate to them all since you saw their reaction to finding out who they are and what they are supposed to do. Some accepted it and some didn’t.  I mean how would you feel if you had to learn how to fight monsters? I gave the book 4/5 stars. I felt as if the book could have had more to it but that is really my only real complaint.

Haven Book Review

Posted on October 6, 2012 by Mackenzie Lynd Posted in Books .

Haven by Kristi CookHaven is the first book in the Winterhaven series. It is written by Kristi Cook. Violet decides to go to a boarding school simply because she feels called to go. When she arrives she finds that one of her deepest secrets is the reason she is there. She has physic abilities along with everyone else. Then she meets a boy and she keeps having visions of his death. Now I saw this book in the store and picked it up right away. I was intrigued by the concept. It is definitely not the story I was expecting, which turned out to be a perk. I liked not knowing what was going to happen next. This book did have some frustrating as I like to call “girl” moments. You know when they doubt everything? That is what I am talking about. The good thing was that it only happened once or twice so it wasn’t that bad. It has a decent pacing. It really picked up halfway through. I really enjoyed the side characters. They actually had a role in the story and were memorable. I gave this book 4.5/5. I really did enjoy it and will continue with the series.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower Book Review

Posted on September 23, 2012 by Mackenzie Lynd Posted in Books .

The Perks Of Being A Wallflower by Stephen ChboskyThe Perks of Being a Wallflower was written by Stephen Chbosky. I mostly read it because of the upcoming movie. It is basically about a boy named Charlie who is going into his freshmen year of high school and is writing letters to his “friend” It takes place over the course of a year and you see his experiences and what really makes him a wallflower. To be truthful I really thought I was not going to be wowed in this book. I was waiting for something big to happen and it never really did. But thinking back on it in real life there isn’t always that big moment. After further thinking when I finished the book I decided to give it 5/5 stars. It really is a great story and I enjoyed how the author put a lot of real life temptations in the book including sex, drugs, and alcohol.
