Author Interview: KC Hilton

Posted on September 17, 2012 by Reyes Saucedo Posted in Books .

KC Hilton

KC HiltonAuthor Interview With KC Hilton:

This is my recent interview with author KC Hilton, she is the author of three writings The Magic of Finkleton series as well as her adult novel 90 Miles To Freedom. KC is a wife, mother, photographer, as well as an author! As a child she was born and raised in Aurora, Illinois. She loved to play with the neighborhood kids when she was little and in her spare time she would read her books.  She currently lives in Kentucky with her family and there dog “Roxy”. Without further ado here is my interview with author KC Hilton!

1. What made you decide that you wanted to be an author?

Honestly, I never thought I’d be a writer. I’m a creative person and I enjoy expressing myself in every aspect of my life. When I was a little girl, I wrote down my dreams and thoughts in a diary. I enjoyed photography and being creative. Being creative and thinking outside of the box spills out of me at every turn. I’m a Master Barber, Photographer and a Writer.

One year during our family vacation, I had a bad dream. Having a bad dream isn’t unusual, but I hadn’t had one in years. It was four o’clock in the morning and everyone was sleeping. In the dark I scribbled what I could on the back of a business card. Usually when I wrote down a bad dream, it would go away, but for months, this particular dream stuck with me. I couldn’t shake it, no matter what I did, so I decided to write the dream in more detail. At one point, I realized it had become a full story. This dream turned out to be 90 Miles to Freedom.  Later I had another fun dream, which became The Magic of Finkleton.

2. What inspires you to write and what keeps you writing?

Being able to express myself is what keeps me writing. I can describe more through words, than through a simple photograph. In the beginning (after getting some bad reviews) I thought about quitting or at least not let my stories see the light of day. But when my stories started getting some great reviews and winning awards, I decided to stick with it. I’m glad I did! I get fan email from a wide variety of people and they are wonderful.

3. Currently, what books have you written?

90 Miles to Freedom

The Magic of Finkleton

Return to Finkleton

4. Where did your ideas come from to write 90 Miles to Freedom, The Magic of Finkleton, and Return to Finkleton?

Most of my ideas come from dreams, but they also come to me while I’m driving long distances. I don’t normally listen to the radio when I travel. If I’m in the middle of writing a book, I like to just think.

5. Do you have any books you are currently writing? If so can you say anything about them?

I’m currently writing a YA book, My Name is Rapunzel. It’s a retelling of a fairytale. Currently I have a small synopsis on Goodreads. Until the entire book and synopsis has been edited, it will remain this way.

Fairy tales are for children. My name is Rapunzel and I will tell you my story. I will tell you the truth.

After I finish writing My Name is Rapunzel, I plan to write the last book in the Finkleton series, Saving Finkleton.

6. Do you read a lot? What is your favorite genre?

Yes, I love to read! I enjoy reading Historical Romance, YA and Adult. Fiction, Romance and Paranormal Romance, but recently I’ve started reading some scary. My favorite genre is Historical Romance.

7. Is book publishing a difficult process? Do you have any advice for people looking to get their books published?

90 Miles to Freedom was picked up by a small publisher and they wanted the Finkleton series.  But I had put so much work into getting to know my readers, having the audio books made, entering contests and marketing; I finally decided to keep it and self publish. It wasn’t hard to do, since I used CreateSpace.

My advice would be to continue to learn the craft of writing. Read, read and read more. Before publishing I strongly suggest hiring an editor, then hire someone to proofread the book, twice. After the book has been proofread, then hire a second proofreader. It’s a must in my opinion. Friends and family can help at first, but ultimately the book needs to have a professional set of eyes do the final proofread. If the expense is a problem, then wait until the money is saved to have this done. In the end, it’ll be worth every penny.

8. And finally, how can people find out more about you? (websites: twitter, goodreads, facebook, blog)
