I LOVED this book!!!
I listened to it while at work and was completely engrossed in the story. The setting and characters were well written and even better narrated about. I was really looking forward to this book, because I love historical fiction, and the medieval world as a rule of thumb.
The story centers around a woman named Jacquetta Woodville. She is the mother of the forthcoming “White Queen” and this was her story. She tells of growing up in the court of Luxembourg and how she was married to a man in the English court whom she did love. Unfortunately she looses him and becomes a widow quickly within the story. She decides to marry again to a man named Barron Rivers whom she loves even more than her first husband and he loved her even more. Being the descendant of a Water Goddess she has the gifts of second sight and other magical abilities. This serves to keep her safe in the politics of the English court where she befriends the queen Margaret of Anju very early on. Their relationship is one very close to sisterhood and understanding the roles of women at the time. Throughout her life, we learn so much about her, and ultimately the various powers as a descendant of apparently, a goddess and as a woman.
Make no mistake though, she takes no shit from anyone and can hold her own while knowing how to speak and play the game. I recommend this book to anyone who loves historical fiction and are looking for a great story. I am putting this on my big book list because the written book is well over 400 pages and the CDs took 15.5 hours to listen to so it counts:) Check this book out first if you want to go chronologically in the war of the Roses. 5/5 stars!
