Mother’s Day Poem: “Motherly Love”

Posted on May 12, 2014 by Carl McKever Posted in Books, Style .

Motherly Love

Happy Mother's Day - May 11, 2014

Happy Mother’s Day – May 11, 2014

She cries and travails
For the child in her womb
The mother and the father
Wants the child born soon

She pushes and breathes every minute and hour
Thinking back on the moments of the baby shower
9 months of labor, tears, and pain
Suggesting and coming up with the child’s name

A newborn baby, a new life to see
A mother’s birth amounts to something
She nurtures and watches her child grow
Respect and dignity she faithfully sows

A mother’s reflection can be seen through their child
When everyone’s given up, she’ll go the extra mile
God blessed her and made her fruitful with her spouse
They also play an important role in the house

Mother’s Day is not one day, but everyday of the year
Her words and her love remains sincere
For mothers living, for mothers dead
They’ve all made sacrifices to see their children fed

Happy Mother’s Day to all of you!
The tears shed, the prayers, and for all you do!
May each and every child one day discover
The overall purpose and love of a mother!

Be Mine, Past and Present: A History of Valentine’s Day

Posted on February 14, 2013 by kejohns323 Posted in Pop Culture, Uncategorized .

Hearts, chocolate, candy, cute cards, roses, candlelight dinners—February 14th always brings forth compulsions with which to indulge passionate affections and expressions for a spouse, a significant other, or even a crush. Such activities are often carried through out of love for another person, which is of course the theme of this romantic holiday. However, there is a sentiment that is deeper than the confections and crafts. That is the celebration of traditional marriage.

Back in third century Rome, Emperor Claudius II outlawed marriage, thinking that single men would make better soldiers compared to those with wives and families. A Catholic priest (named either Valentine or Valentinus) in the church disagreed with this sanction and performed marriages in secret. He was imprisoned when found out, but even then performed ceremonies from jail. Some legends claim he helped Christians escape from the prisons where they were tortured and beaten. It’s also been said that, in a letter written before his death to a girl he fell in love with, he supposedly signed it “from your valentine”; considerably starting the “valentine” greeting that is known today.

In the fifth century, this particular date was deemed to honor this Saint Valentine. Then, throughout the centuries, the day would become associated with love. One connection between them may have come from England and France in the Middle Ages. It was thought that birds began their mating season on that day.

Valentines can be red, pink, or cherry, but valentines celebrate the freedom to love and marry! A gift for your love is only a part of the rages, but love between two has lasted through the ages. Love is in the air, so go love the one you’re with. And maybe impress them with these fun facts if you care…

Valentine Fun Facts:

  • In the 1840’s the first valentines were mass produced and sold in the United States. Nowadays, 150 million Valentine’s Day cards are exchanged annually, making Valentine’s Day the second most popular card-sending holiday after Christmas.
  • In addition to the U.S., Valentine’s Day is celebrated in Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, France, Australia, Denmark, Italy and Japan.
  • 448 million dollars are spent on candy the week before Valentine’s Day. 58 million pounds of chocolate candy are sold in that time. And about 8 billion Sweetheart candies are produced annually. Most of which are sold between January 1st and February 14th.
  •   23% of adults say they will buy flowers. Of that majority, 61% are men and 39% are women. Mixed flowers are the number one choice for flowers given on this holiday. Red roses come second, and other colored roses are third.

Days of December

Posted on December 1, 2012 by kejohns323 Posted in Pop Culture .

December is always the most spirited month of the year! While it may the Christmas season in full swing now with its Days of Decemberloads of lights, décor, songs, and sales—emphasis on the songs and sales! It may also be any other number other holidays and observances that are celebrated in this month…

Historically, it’s a busy month. Observed on the first is Rosa Park’s refusal to give up her seat on a public bus in 1955—an event which set forth the civil rights movement for her people. The seventh is memorialized for Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. The sixteenth marks the anniversary of the 1773 Boston Tea Party. Then the seventeenth is declared Wright Brothers Day, for their first aircraft flight at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina in 1901.

Many artists and names of fame we know and love today celebrate days of birth this month. Just a few to list are Walt Disney (on the fifth), Emily Dickinson (on the tenth), Frank Sinatra (on the twelfth), Ludwig Van Beethoven (on the sixteenth), and Tiger Woods (on the thirtieth).

Recognized and celebrated for longer periods of time out of the month are events like Hanukkah and Kwanzaa  Hanukkah is an eight-day ceremony that commemorates the ancient historical rededication of the Jewish Holy Temple. It is often otherwise known as the Festival of Lights, as it is celebrated with lighting candles on a menorah. This year it starts on the eighth. Kwanzaa honors African-American heritage and culture from the twenty-sixth to January first. It was created in 1966 as the first specifically African-American holiday.

Starting the sixteenth, some Latino countries observe what they call Las Posadas (this translates to the inn or lodging). It is a nine-day reenactment of Joseph’s and Mary’s search for an inn the night she gave birth to Christ. Traditionally it takes the form of a children’s parade, where the participants are dressed as shepherds, angels, the wise men, and Joseph and Mary themselves. Adults follow carrying candles. They travel to a designated home, exchange lyrics to a special song, then celebrate with food, music, piñatas, and even fireworks.

From beginning to end, December is full days to remember and celebrate! Whatever it is you’re commemorating, ToastPop hopes you have fun and stay safe!

Songs of the Season

Posted on December 2, 2011 by kejohns323 Posted in Art .

Hark! The herald angels sing,
Glory to the newborn King!
Sleeping in Heavenly peace on a silent night
in oh little town of Bethlehem
He has come to bring joy to the world!

Mary, did you know that the child that you deliver
Will soon deliver you?
Holy infant, so tender and mild
God and sinner reconcile

Joyful all ye nations rise,
Join the triumph of the skies,
with angelic host proclaim,
Go tell it on the mountain
Over the hills and everywhere,
That Jesus Christ is born.

These are the carols that we sing,
During Christmastime
These tunes are more than just holiday rhymes,
They tell of God’s love divine

Frosty and Rudolph and snow days are nice,
But they cannot compare to God’s sacrifice.
He sent His Son, Jesus, for the world’s sin to die
And for the gift of eternal life even Santa can’t supply

Christmas trees are fine to see,
But I prefer what the angels sing:
Peace on Earth and the first Noel,
Good will to men from the King of Israel.

This, this is Christ the King, whom shepherds guard and angels sing!
Salvation from sin will come from this Heavenly being!
Fullness of God in a small child
So God and sinners reconcile

Black Friday 2011

Posted on November 13, 2011 by James Agee Posted in Uncategorized .

So many of you are preparing for a sleepless night at the stores in regards to your Black Friday shopping. Well, I am here with a little advice that could possibly save you the crowds, sleep, and a nice chunk of change! Amazon.com has already started their Pre-Black Friday sales, and their deals are nothing short of enticing. This is Amazon’s way of drawing you to their site on a daily basis leading up to Black Friday itself. The main thing to remember is that while these deals are pretty good (ex. Buy a PS3 get a $50 Amazon.com credit) you may still find some of the deals on things such as DVD’s and music to be better when Amazon begins their actual Black Friday deals. To be honest the deal on select game systems where you get a free $50 Amazon credit to use on pretty much anything, except most digital content, is almost too good to pass up.

So how do we propose that you avoid the Black Friday madness this year? Check out the online Black Friday deals, because you may just be surprised at how much time you will save and of course avoiding the crowds is always nice! Amazon.com seems to be the place to look this year for amazing deals this holiday season. You will probably find many websites that have much better deals than the stores do this year, just make sure you are online at the right times because some of them only run deals certain times of the day or until their supply is all bought out. So save time, money, and enjoy the holidays a little more this year by doing your Black Friday shopping online!
