This book was a recommendation from a YouTube friend. We each gave each other 5 books that we thought the other person would like, or that would kick us out of our reading comfort zones for a bit. When I picked up this book first, I did not know what to expect. Janie really enjoys this author so I figured I would give him a try. I can honestly say, I liked what I read.
I do not want this to be a spoiler laden review, so I will just say that Maberry created a very memorable and crazy character in Joe Ledger. I enjoyed his take no shit attitude, the way he handled himself, and how the character was introduced and grew in the entire novel. The best thing about the character was that he was a simple man in many ways. He was like the average Joe, as it were, but had a quality about him that I enjoyed but could not quite put my finger on.
The setting and pacing were something I very much enjoyed. There were a lot of chapters, but the way Maberry wrote it, the small chapters worked well. It kept the story moving along quickly, which is important to me when reading these kinds of books. My only complaint was that toward the end things seemed to slow down but then pick up so I am giving this 4.5/5 stars. I think I will be picking up another Maberry book soon.
