Sergio Lorenzo Pizzorno (better known as Serge) first found fame being the lead guitarist and backing vocalist of the alternative rock band Kasabian.
After releasing 6 albums with Kasabian, Serge has decided to begin another side project, this time under the title ‘The S.L.P’ (the letters representing his initials).
The S.L.P released thier first song ‘Favourites’ in May of 2019 and it features the rapper / artist Little Simz. The song is a smooth and easy listening soft rock song, with a funky soulful sound and bright vocals by both Serge and Little Simz. It slowly builds and builds until the full bodied instrumental takes over and carries the rest of the song.
‘Favourites’ is a brilliant song in general but is also a great choice for a first single as it gives fans and listeners an idea of how the sound and shape of the band’s music will be presented in relation to the debut album. The addition of Little Simz on the record makes the track more commercially viable but does not over compensate the overall music craftsmanship on show. Her verses are sharp and colourful and her lyrics are clever and forthcoming.
The second single ‘Nobody Else’ and the third single ‘The Youngest Gary’ followed shortly and were also great tracks, following up on the soft, melodic rock vibes presented by the first single ‘Favourites’. There are no features by other artists on either of these songs, and they work really well on their own.
Sergio started this solo project when his former band Kasabian were on a one year hiatus. He has said that he created the project to ‘explore the extreme sides’ of his personality in order to try and keep himself sane.
He recorded the whole 11 track album on his own at his studio in Leicester. The album is scheduled to be released on the 30th August 2019, and will also include a feature by slowthai, a new and interesting rapper (look out for the Music Spotlight on slowthai in the future).
I am looking forward to the release of this album and I will be reviewing it on Toastpop shortly after it is dropped (I even have a countdown to the release date on my phone! Only 15 days left!)
The S.L.P are definitely ones to look out for!
