Less is more when it comes to summer style. The season’s fashion trends encourage outfits with shorts, sandals, and tank tops to comfortably beat the heat. This rule of thumb is also good to practice when it comes to makeup. The reduction of covering in summer fashion trends show off your body (hopefully in a good way!), so why not show off your nice natural complexion as well? Less makeup reveals more confidence and a beauty that is uniquely yours. A natural look says you’re comfortable in your own skin, and it’s more appealing to others when a thick-layered painted face isn’t the first thing they see. Also, if you’re one to have fun in the sun all the time, the natural look is better because you don’t have to worry about a face full of runny makeup.
To attain a natural look, here are some of my suggestions:
- Match your skin color. This is the first step: use a color of foundation that matches the color of your skin. Anything different is a surefire indicator of an unnatural look.
- Compliment your features. Other cosmetics like blush, eye shadow, and lip products should be used to subtly enhance your features. Enrich your natural flush with a light pink shade of blush. Bring out your eyes with either a nude color or a shade that balances with your eye color. You have similar options using lip products as well: either a natural color or a light shade to match the natural color. Gloss should be used sparingly.
- Don’t highlight everything. You may love everything about your face, but for the sake of a natural look pick only one or two features to enhance with makeup.
- Don’t use many dark, liquid, inky products. Mascara and some liners are the products that are most likely to run when your face starts to get hot and sweat. They would also weigh down the otherwise light, natural look you’re trying to accomplish. If you have to, consider a light and natural colored liner.
Less is more is what is all comes down to in order to work a natural look. It’s not hard either. Just use less makeup (or none at all); use light colors that are natural to your skin tone; and emphasize your features. This beauty style is simple to do and best suited for the summertime—just like the season’s clothing and trends.
