Here is a video review of Loot Crate. It is a monthly subscription box that I love to get. It is only 20 dollars a month and they have many different plans to choose from. I do the monthly plan but you can go up to a year in advance. This box was pretty good. I was a bit disappointed in the wearable this time, but they cannot always to t-shirts, I guess. Enjoy! If you want to sign up and get your first book at a discount, just type in Save3 at checkout and get $3 off your first box:)
This was actually better than I expected:) I started watching the TV series when it started on Lifetime when it was on, and I saw it was based on a book series so I decided to pick up the first one and get reading. There are changes of course but the book itself is well written.
Witches is based on Freya and Ingrid two sister witches who live in the mortal world with their mother Joanna but have been prohibited to use their magic from the all powerful council of witches. Well, they live in the town of Hampton NY and all hate that they cannot use their magic but it does not stop them. Freya is the wild child bartender who is engaged to one man Bran and is boinking his brother Killian for kicks. This creates a unique set of issues and brings a hell of a lot of drama. Despite the drama Freya has a big heart and tries to balance the insanity of her life while being a good sister and daughter.
Ingrid is the down to earth feet on the ground sister who works at the library and does not like to put herself in the middle of drama. She is just the picture of smarts and some would say fridgidity but as the book continues, she begins to grow and by the end of the book she comes out of her shell just a bit. Likable and fun in her own ways she gives a wonderful foil to her crazy fun sister.
Joanna is the typical protective mom and shields her girls from some things while not from other things but she is formidable in her own way. Not much is really said about Joanna in this book so we get very little back story but we know she had a husband and something happened when the girls were young and he has left the picture. She has the most amazing mother instincts and uses her magic with great care but also does not take any shit from anyone.
Despite the small flaws of slowness in some areas and the sexual tension being a bit forced at times it was a good book and I am looking forward to picking up the next one, Serpent’s Kiss. 4/5 Stars!
As readers, we all have our favorite genres. Some of us like mystery, others, Historical Fiction. Sometimes, there is a craving for other genres such as Young Adult, or even Erotica. What some readers don’t do is read outside their genre. This is simply not reading away from the genre they gravitate to each time they pick up or buy a book.
I am one of those people who did not like to read outside his favorite genre until recently. My genre of choice is Historical Fiction, specifically anything set in Medieval or Tudor England. There has always been something about that time period that has called to me. I have many books on my shelves from various authors that write only Historical Fiction, from Phillippa Gregory, to Sarah Bower, and others in between.
This does not mean I was not open to other genres, I simply did not think to look at them as frequently when I went to the library, or to a bookstore. I saw all kinds of genres at my disposal, and sometimes I contemplated picking them up but then would not find anything that really interested me, and I would default back to my go to genre.
Recently, I have made it my goal to read more books outside my “safe zone”, as I have come to call it. I have started to find some great authors such as Tess Gerritsen, Gillian Flynn, and even some good YA authors to boot. One of my new favorite genres to get me used to new and exciting authors is to read Japanese Manga/Graphic novels. I love reading them as palate cleansers in between larger books (and yes, I count them toward my Good Reads challenge) because the artwork is usually really good, and the stories are wonderful too. There are occasionally some bad apples, but you can get those in your chosen genre too, so in the end, there is no excuse to neglect other genres, or authors based on a safe zone that you may have built for yourself as a reader.
It can be difficult to read outside your favorite genre, whatever it may be, but I promise that if you open your mind, you will find some great authors that you would have never expected to find. That is what happened to me, and I am happy to say not only has my reading grown, but I have grown as a reader because I decided to embrace new and exciting authors and the works that they put out into the book world for us all to enjoy.
I picked this book up at the local library after reading the synopsis on another website. I have always enjoyed the tale of Sleeping Beauty and this cover and title just caught my eye. I was not really disappointed in the contents of these pages.
The first 100 pages were difficult to get through. The author was trying to set up the world she built which was one of historical accuracy and other things that just needed to be put down before the book got going. When it did get going after that initial page count it went almost full speed ahead. I liked that the author kept the princess’s name as Rose, and that she only changed what we would know the character of Maleficent’s name to Millicent although I must confess I had the Disney version of Maleficent in my mind whenever Millicent came up in the story which was actually quite fun.
I enjoyed the pacing of this book and how Ms. Blackwell was able to weave what we all know as a fairy tale into a believable “could have happened” story because she took an aspect of history (the plague) and put it right into the story. It was not only seamless but it fit the entire idea of the prose to boot. I was taken aback at some of the scenes, but I also enjoyed that a woman named Elise kept Rose alive and not some man. It gave another great element to this story and made it even more believable despite being fiction. I would recommend this book to anyone who, like me enjoys historical fiction and especially if you like the fairy-tale of Sleeping Beauty. 4/5 Stars!
I’m not sure if Iron Man is my favorite Avenger, or if Robert Downey Jr. is, but one thing I know for sure is that JARVIS is my new favorite app! Tony Stark’s artificial (super) intelligence personal assistant can be yours for free on any Apple iOS device. It’s a voice command app (similar to Siri), and the program will respond with dialogue voiced by Paul Betteny, the voice of JARVIS in the Marvel movies. To the best of his ability, JARVIS will do a host of tasks for you. With a touch or a command, JARVIS reads out the current date and time, describe the weather conditions for the day and forecast for the following days, acknowledge reminders and alarms you set on the program, and even notify you of incoming calls or messages. JARVIS can connect you to Facebook or Twitter, and even control your Blu-Ray copy of Iron Man 3. JARVIS also holds a gallery of the forty-two different marks of Iron Man suits—which you might consider using when the weather is nice, as JARVIS might suggest—and other cool things to be unlocked with a purchase of the movie! This app is the first to provide a second screen experience through voice command. The reviews on the on the app are very positive and praiseworthy, so any Iron Man/Marvel fan will be satisfied with it. JARVIS is just one of the tricks and toys that make Tony Stark the awesome and invincible Iron Man. (And unless something happens to your phone, it won’t be taken away from you) You can feel the same with your own app today!
Around the world there are many different names for the sweatshirt. You might find it called a sweater, a jumper, a pullover, a jersey, a guernsey, a tank top and a hoody amongst many others.
Opinion differs in different countries about the exact nature of the sweatshirt and who invented it. The history is cloudy and the exact design confusing. Should it be made of wool or cotton? Is a top you where for rugby or football a sweatshirt? … there’s a lot to think about.
So, in an effort to clear things up a bit, let’s try and break down just what a sweatshirt is. You never know, it might help you figure out which is the one for you.
OK, so a jumper or pullover, as they are often referred to in the UK and USA, is more like a woollen, warm item of clothing. A tank top is a short-sleeved jumper in the UK and a waistcoat in the USA.
A jersey, or as we call it a guernsey, is what you wear when you’re playing sport for a team. It’s usually made of synthetic material and often doesn’t smell too good – especially if you forget to wash it between matches.
A hoody is getting a little closer to a sweatshirt in that it’s often made of the same cotton-based material as a sweatshirt, except that it has, well, a hood – obviously.
Hoodies also sometimes have zips up the middle, which would make it closer to a cardigan (which until recently were definitely not cool unless you were in your 70s).
So that leaves us with the pure sweatshirt. It’s a long-sleeved item, made from thick cotton, sometimes but not always with a fleece inner lining.
Its original design saw it used for sports and working out, with the thick cotton absorbing the sweat – hence the name. These days, the sweatshirt is worn for much more than just working out though and it comes in many colours, sometimes plain but often with writing, slogans or designs on.
Most major sports and fashion brands will make a sweatshirt and it’s a comfortable, practical and good-looking piece of clothing.
You’ll still have to argue with some people about just what makes a sweatshirt but as long as you’re happy and comfortable wearing yours, it really doesn’t matter what you or anyone else calls it.

“It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.” This is the line that begins the timeless Jane Austen classic Pride and Prejudice. Most literary critics would think of this line as a reflection (or a satire) upon relational values of Jane Austen’s time and place in history, but to the average reader, it sets the premise of the love story it is today known to be. However you read Jane Austen, this year celebrates two hundred years of existence for Pride and Prejudice. Perhaps it’s a truth universally acknowledged now that a lot has changed in society since Austen wrote it. Being so far removed from Austen’s time in this day and age certainly puts a damper on fully understanding this beloved classic, but The Lizzie Bennet Diaries brings it all to the twenty-first century.
The Lizzie Bennet Diaries portrays the Austen classic in a very contemporary way, and still remains true to the tale. It is a one hundred episode blog series on Youtube that is hosted by the headstrong, independent Lizzie Bennet. In each short episode she unfolds a dramatic scene from Pride and Prejudice with her intelligent best friend, Charlotte Wu; her perfect sister, Jane; their wild-child sister, Lydia; their restless, southern-bell mother and aloof father; the rich and sweet Dr. Bing Li, and many other characters from the novel. Whether you’re a fan of Jane Austen, or you’re trying to understand what’s going on in Pride and Prejudice, it is fun, enjoyable, and easy for anyone to follow. The modern aspect is a big help in understanding the plot and dated references.
Though rich, single men may not always be seeking marriage these days; nor might unusual women be anxious to snatch them up, The Lizzie Bennet Diaries bridges the two century time span to enlighten and entertain students and lovers of classic literature. All the modern aspects of the series, like the web-blogging medium, the colorful characters, and the pop culture craving for drama, are tuned to reflect the classic novel, which makes great entertainment for the literary enthusiast, a wonderful supplement or resource for studying Pride and Prejudice. The Lizzie Bennet Diaries introduces the classic to modern times.
