Reading Outside Your Comfort Zone

Posted on May 25, 2015 by Rob Flood Posted in Books .

Reading Outside Your Comfort ZoneAs readers, we all have our favorite genres. Some of us like mystery, others, Historical Fiction. Sometimes, there is a craving for other genres such as Young Adult, or even Erotica. What some readers don’t do is read outside their genre. This is simply not reading away from the genre they gravitate to each time they pick up or buy a book.

I am one of those people who did not like to read outside his favorite genre until recently. My genre of choice is Historical Fiction, specifically anything set in Medieval or Tudor England. There has always been something about that time period that has called to me. I have many books on my shelves from various authors that write only Historical Fiction, from Phillippa Gregory, to Sarah Bower, and others in between.

This does not mean I was not open to other genres, I simply did not think to look at them as frequently when I went to the library, or to a bookstore. I saw all kinds of genres at my disposal, and sometimes I contemplated picking them up but then would not find anything that really interested me, and I would default back to my go to genre.

Recently, I have made it my goal to read more books outside my “safe zone”, as I have come to call it. I have started to find some great authors such as Tess Gerritsen, Gillian Flynn, and even some good YA authors to boot. One of my new favorite genres to get me used to new and exciting authors is to read Japanese Manga/Graphic novels. I love reading them as palate cleansers in between larger books (and yes, I count them toward my Good Reads challenge) because the artwork is usually really good, and the stories are wonderful too. There are occasionally some bad apples, but you can get those in your chosen genre too, so in the end, there is no excuse to neglect other genres, or authors based on a safe zone that you may have built for yourself as a reader.

It can be difficult to read outside your favorite genre, whatever it may be, but I promise that if you open your mind, you will find some great authors that you would have never expected to find. That is what happened to me, and I am happy to say not only has my reading grown, but I have grown as a reader because I decided to embrace new and exciting authors and the works that they put out into the book world for us all to enjoy.

Distraction-Free Writing: How to Handle Distractions

Posted on March 13, 2014 by Carl McKever Posted in Lifestyle .

Distraction-Free Writing- How to Handle DistractionsI’m making it a habit to write daily; that is, whatever comes to mind. A person can write for years and become good at it. Yet, they suffer with distractions. Writers are not exempt from distractions. Every writer has a personal life outside of writing and they too, have to deal with this. It agitates me madly when I’m trying to write down my thoughts and a train passes by my place of stay. My neighbors, sometimes, family will play loud music or constantly knock on my door. Better yet, the phone seems to never stop ringing. No one is calling about something important and you think, “Couldn’t this wait until a later time?” Writing in a world filled with distractions is very difficult. It takes a lot of skill and technique to get beyond it. Today, I want to share some techniques with you that I think could help you as a writer, author, novelist, poet, lyricist, or whatever form of writing you enjoy doing.

My first tip is staying focused. Writing is considered a goal. There’s an end and a finish to it. You pick up your pen or pencil, apply it to paper, and then let your thoughts ride. The minute I notice a distraction, I speak to my inner self and remind myself to keep going. You can’t quit till you cross the finish line and feel satisfied with your writing piece.

The second tip I have to offer is taking a break. What! Are you sure? Yes, I am sure. You have to give your brain and thought process a break after a certain amount of hours. My rule of thumb is every four hours. During your break, leave your current setting and find a new atmosphere. Find a spot that’s calm and relaxing, such as a park. Remember to bring a notebook and something to write with. Don’t make it an intention to write because this is a break, remember? I am asking you to bring a notebook because you can run into something that intrigues you. I call this the test of the wills. Thoughts come and go, and you cannot expect your brain to remember the ones coming at you rapidly.

Distraction-Free Writing- How to Handle DistractionsThe third tip is finding the perfect timeframe. This is very difficult, though it sounds easy. Some writers have to write late at night when everyone in the house is sleep and all personal errands are done for the day. Other writers prefer to write in wee morning hours before any chaos hits the day. I have even seen some writers write in the middle of the day, during their lunch breaks from work, and at certain times designated for writing.

I want you all to succeed in your writing. The very last tip I have to offer is grabbing a cup of coffee or tea. Drinking something hot stimulates the mind and pushes you to continue writing down your thoughts when distractions are near. Please do not flatter yourself into thinking that you will not have to deal with distractions when you write. Distractions come in many forms; down to the sound of forceful wind. It’s how you handle them and how well you use emotional intelligence to balance your attitude about the distractions.

Good luck and promote “distraction-free writing” wherever you go!

Personalised Hoodies

Posted on November 20, 2013 by Toast Pop Posted in Style .

Personalised HoodiesWhat have Justin Bieber, Renee Zellweger, Princes William and Harry, Michelle Obama and Zara Phillips in common? They’ve all been spotted, out and proud, wearing their hoodies. What was introduced as essential work clothing in freezing New York warehouses eighty years ago has now become one of the world’s most recognisable pieces of clothing.

Second question – what have legendary fashion designers Tommy Hilfiger, Ralph Lauren, and Giorgio Armani all introduced into their famous collections? You’ll probably have guessed the answer! With increasing numbers of older folk now wearing the garment as protection from biting winter winds, it’s surely true to say that the hoodie has definitely come of age.

What exactly is a hoodie?

One dictionary definition goes no further than describing it as “a hooded sweatshirt”. A more detailed explanation adds the muff (sometimes also called a kangaroo pocket) to keep your hands warm, drawstring to adjust the neck opening and, sometimes, a partial or full front zipper. To general tutting from some, hoodies have even been spotted being worn under a suit jacket!

How a hoodie spreads your message

One of the earliest developments in the use of embroidered hoodies was in US colleges; and now some schools in the UK have also included them as part of their uniform. They are a simple, terrific, and comfortable way of identifying your team – whether in an educational, sports, work or social environment. This can be for fun events, but also to present an effective marketing message about a business or organisation.

Moving the bar just one notch higher

Many hoodies already sport printed logos or messages across them. However, if you’d like to add just that extra touch of class to yours, help is at hand. With more than thirty years fashion wear experience, the people at Brandawear are experts at delivering a range of stunningly embroidered quality choices to help you create exactly the impression you wish.

About the embroidering process

Embroidery is accepted as the best way to produce truly high quality and long lasting designs for your hoodies. The process adds chain stitching directly into the garment to create your design. Embroidered hoodies are cost-effective because the design should outlast most other options. The original artwork, which Brandawear always assess for viability before starting the process, can use up to fifteen colours to produce a stunning finished effect for both slogans and logos.

Choosing your personalised hoodies

Before the process starts, you can select the most effective hoodie for the circumstances in which it will be worn. A visit to www.brandawear.co.uk will allow you first to examine their terrific range of quality garments, famous brand names, and sizes. Once that choice is made, you can then select your preferred colour. Simply enter the quantity you require and you can quickly place your embroidery on the breast, chest, sleeve or neck of the garment.

Within a few minutes, you’ll have designed your own hoodies, and your order will be confirmed. Before long their superbly embroidered logo or message will be proudly worn and effectively displayed for all the world to see. All those wearing it will surely feel good too!

Plus Size and Proud: Fashion Blogs and Sites for Women

Posted on November 15, 2013 by Toast Pop Posted in Style .

Plus Size and Proud- Fashion Blogs and Sites for WomenThin isn’t always “in”. There are so many women who proud of their shapeliness. Women who are without a rhyme or reason to try and change who they like to be; themselves. That being said, there are no doubt places where plus sized women can go to enjoy the company of others with like minds and similar interests. This includes forums, blogs, and websites that are solely oriented towards a plus sized audience.

When buying clothes for the plus sized individual, it can be hard when most online shopping sites tend to cater to the thinly sized models in their advertisement pictures. This is basically an unspoken message that the sizes they sell might not go much higher than what a small or medium waist would wear. Thankfully, there are sites, such as www.curvety.com that cater to the plus sized model body type, along with the average woman’s size.

There are places to go on the web for communication with others in similar situations and with people who can relate to living as a plus sized woman. Some of these websites include such blogs as www.thecurvyfashionista.com, where plus sized women in the fashion world are extensively highlighted. The blog also features tips and tricks to everyday women’s clothing, makeup application tips, and is the prime place to go for women oriented talk shows.

Fashion lines, such as Tru Diva, are hosted there. Other blogs that center around the life of individual plus sized women, such as www.theplussideofme.com, can also provide tips for fashion, as well as giving some insight into the everyday life of a proudly plus sized woman. For this blog in particular, the fasion clothing brand Kiyonna is particularly favored. This clothing line can be accessed at www.Kiyonna.com, where numerous shipping options are available and numerous styles of dress can be accessed.

The great thing about these blogs is that there is usually a list of affiliated links located on the main landing page, which more often than not can include sites of similar taste and style. These can be helpful links that will provide more exposure to new interests and even sites that you might visit on a regular basis, due to it having content that pertains to the blog’s topics.

Taking a look at online stores for plus sized women can be most helpful for those who might live in smaller towns, that don’t have many brick and mortar plus sized women clothing shops. It can also help out those women who live in even larger cities, but don’t live within a short driving distance from any plus sized outlets nearest them.

Items that can only be found exclusively online can also be found there, that probably would not be carried at a typical store. For example, specially tailored clothing can easily be ordered with a specific sizing, if special measurements are required for clothing and accessories. Not to mention, many of the more upscale plus sized fashion designers might only sell their clothing lines on specific web sites.

tips,

No Sweat: How to Get the Right Sweatshirt

Posted on August 19, 2013 by Toast Pop Posted in Style .

No sweat: how to get the right sweatshirt

Around the world there are many different names for the sweatshirt. You might find it called a sweater, a jumper, a pullover, a jersey, a guernsey, a tank top and a hoody amongst many others.

Opinion differs in different countries about the exact nature of the sweatshirt and who invented it. The history is cloudy and the exact design confusing. Should it be made of wool or cotton? Is a top you where for rugby or football a sweatshirt? … there’s a lot to think about.

So, in an effort to clear things up a bit, let’s try and break down just what a sweatshirt is. You never know, it might help you figure out which is the one for you.

OK, so a jumper or pullover, as they are often referred to in the UK and USA, is more like a woollen, warm item of clothing. A tank top is a short-sleeved jumper in the UK and a waistcoat in the USA.

A jersey, or as we call it a guernsey, is what you wear when you’re playing sport for a team. It’s usually made of synthetic material and often doesn’t smell too good – especially if you forget to wash it between matches.

A hoody is getting a little closer to a sweatshirt in that it’s often made of the same cotton-based material as a sweatshirt, except that it has, well, a hood – obviously.

Hoodies also sometimes have zips up the middle, which would make it closer to a cardigan (which until recently were definitely not cool unless you were in your 70s).

So that leaves us with the pure sweatshirt. It’s a long-sleeved item, made from thick cotton, sometimes but not always with a fleece inner lining.

Its original design saw it used for sports and working out, with the thick cotton absorbing the sweat – hence the name. These days, the sweatshirt is worn for much more than just working out though and it comes in many colours, sometimes plain but often with writing, slogans or designs on.

Most major sports and fashion brands will make a sweatshirt and it’s a comfortable, practical and good-looking piece of clothing.

You’ll still have to argue with some people about just what makes a sweatshirt but as long as you’re happy and comfortable wearing yours, it really doesn’t matter what you or anyone else calls it.

The Allure of Sunglasses

Posted on June 25, 2013 by Toast Pop Posted in Style .

The Allure of SunglassesSunglasses have, apparently, been around for hundreds of years. Some wise man in China fashioned some to protect his eyes from the sun’s glare in the 15th century. Clever him. They only really became popular in the 1930s, when pilots started wearing the ‘Aviator’ style of sunglasses. Although this craze was widespread for a time, the Second World War meant people’s minds were elsewhere and sunglasses were not seen for a few years. Glamorous film stars and celebrities were keen on them in the 1950s and 60s, but it was in the 70s that they once again became widespread. Hippies loved to wear shades, man.

The thing I’ve never quite understood about sunglasses is why people feel the need to wear them even when it’s not sunny. OK, if you’re a celebrity or a British royal trying to escape the press’ beady eye, perhaps they are a good idea. But for the average man or woman on the street, you need to have real delusions of grandeur to want to wear the sunnies year round.

Take last week for example. There I am, happily minding my own business doing the weekly shop, when suddenly the doors to the food store swing open, as if a bolt of lightning had struck them. In from the dripping rain and gloom came a tall, striking woman, with long flowing blonde hair and clearly a good taste in shoes. Skin tight jeans, red nails and a bright red cami top completed the look. Her pretty features were somewhat masked by the huge sunglasses she was wearing. This despite the fact that at that point we hadn’t seen the sun for several weeks, and the rain was literally being thrown down by a very angry God.

Said sunglasses-clad woman strode purposefully through the shop, occasionally stopping to pick up an aubergine, chocolate, or other necessary purchases. She mustered her goods to the checkout and left without saying a word. It was as if a beautiful, mini-tornado had whirled its way through our local convenience store. Strangely enough, I secretly kind of liked her.

Think of all the heroes and villains of the popular culture films we have grown up watching. The protagonists of The Terminator, Men in Black and Top Gun are but a few examples. Sunglasses are the crowning glory on either a scoundrel or a saint. They make a person look edgy, stylish and cool. If you hide your eyes from the world, you are hiding how you really feel. This gives you a certain amount of power.

Imagine a world where you could not read people’s facial expressions, or make eye contact with people. It would make people listen much more carefully. Whether you were doing a job interview, or simply going out for dinner with friends, our whole social world would be very different.

The styles of sunglasses to choose from are many and varied. Perhaps you like the Wayfarer type, with its allusions back to the 80s, or Police brand shades. Maybe you like to go retro and wear 50s style glasses, or those polarised action hero sunglasses we see in the films. Girls can bling up their sunglasses with a pair of diamante shades from Dolce & Gabbana, whilst guys can add the bling by wearing a pair of gold tops. However you prefer to wear them, there’s bound to be a pair to suit you this season. My advice would be to get looking now, before the summer rush.

Just try not to wear them in the rain and the dark, if you’re in my part of town.

Jimmy Choo Uggs – Defines Your Style

Posted on June 18, 2013 by Toast Pop Posted in Style .

Jimmy Choo Uggs – Defines Your StyleUgg boots are extremely popular these days. Ugg boots have a unisex style, which makes them one of the most loved boots by people.  Jimmy Choo Uggs are one of the finest uggs available in the market today. They not only impress girls, but are becoming a heart-throb with men too. There are several reasons for the success of Jimmy Choo Uggs. They are unbeatable in terms of style and features. You cannot get anything better than Uggs from Jimmy Choo. They possess quality and style, which make them way ahead of others.

Why choose Jimmy Choo Uggs?

Uggs are one of the most popular boots among young men and women. Uggs are famous for their style and comfort. They have a unique appearance and design that is completely different from any other boot types. These have made their solid impact in the market with their initial releases. There are many features of Jimmy Choo Uggs that make them unique and better than others. The very first thing that you will notice about these uggs is the unique style. The uggs are made to catch your eyes instantly. They are really cute with very nice embellishments. You can find a pair of boots for every occasion for sure.

Affordable, high quality Uggs

This brand does not compromise with quality. The quality is probably at its best, and moreover, you do not have to pay too much for them either. These are affordable, yet you do not have to negotiate with poor quality at all. If you are fond of uggs, these are the best boots that you can ever get. The price range is well below $800 for standard quality boots. For the same quality, if you are going to buy any other brand, you will certainly have to spend more dollars. Moreover, the design may not be that good as that of Jimmy Choo. This makes a huge difference when shopping. You get extremely high quality material with great design and looks at rock bottom prices.

Special offers

Jimmy Choo also gives some special and seasonal offers with the new releases. There are many limited edition releases too that are also released every new season. Australian sheepskin boot design is a superb release and is one of the latest exclusive limited edition releases revealed.

Case study

“Uggs are my favorite boots. I just cannot imagine how would I look without them I winters. I tried lots of uggs brands. Some were good, but the main problem that I faced was with quality and price. I never got a perfect balance between these two. When I found Jimmy Choo Uggs, I was really blessed. My first reaction when I looked at them was “Wow”. I could not stop myself from buying one. I really like the authentic design and construction that can be seen only in high range Australian sheepskin boots. I would definitely recommend them to all uggs lovers.” – Natalia Grey, California, USA.

Summer Style: The Natural Look

Posted on June 14, 2013 by kejohns323 Posted in Style .

Less is more when it comes to summer style. The season’s fashion trends encourage outfits with shorts, sandals, and tank tops to comfortably beat the heat. This rule of thumb is also good to practice when it comes to makeup. The reduction of Fashion shot of beautiful blonde woman on the beach in Hawaiicovering in summer fashion trends show off your body (hopefully in a good way!), so why not show off your nice natural complexion as well? Less makeup reveals more confidence and a beauty that is uniquely yours. A natural look says you’re comfortable in your own skin, and it’s more appealing to others when a thick-layered painted face isn’t the first thing they see. Also, if you’re one to have fun in the sun all the time, the natural look is better because you don’t have to worry about a face full of runny makeup.

To attain a natural look, here are some of my suggestions:

  • Match your skin color. This is the first step: use a color of foundation that matches the color of your skin. Anything different is a surefire indicator of an unnatural look.
  • Compliment your features. Other cosmetics like blush, eye shadow, and lip products should be used to subtly enhance your features. Enrich your natural flush with a light pink shade of blush. Bring out your eyes with either a nude color or a shade that balances with your eye color. You have similar options using lip products as well: either a natural color or a light shade to match the natural color. Gloss should be used sparingly.
  • Don’t highlight everything. You may love everything about your face, but for the sake of a natural look pick only one or two features to enhance with makeup.
  • Don’t use many dark, liquid, inky products. Mascara and some liners are the products that are most likely to run when your face starts to get hot and sweat. They would also weigh down the otherwise light, natural look you’re trying to accomplish. If you have to, consider a light and natural colored liner.

Less is more is what is all comes down to in order to work a natural look. It’s not hard either. Just use less makeup (or none at all); use light colors that are natural to your skin tone; and emphasize your features. This beauty style is simple to do and best suited for the summertime—just like the season’s clothing and trends.

Just about any fashion or beauty magazine would have something on attaining the natural summer look. Start finding more tips and inspiration at these sites:

Diane Von Furstenberg Dress: How to Recognize a Fake Dress?

Posted on June 14, 2013 by Toast Pop Posted in Style .

Diane Von Furstenberg DressFew facts about the designer

Diane Von Furstenberg is one of the established fashion designers the world has known. She was born on 31st December 1946 in Belgium. Her success story began in 1972, when she gifted the fashion world with her first iconic wrap dress specially designed for working women. She decided to start a career in fashion, after she got married to Prince Egon. In the year 1970 in New York, she started designing clothes for women. And in 1972, she started her own manufacturing unit. But her career as a fashion designer took a turn when she produced the “wrap dress”, which actually brought about a revolution in the apparel of America’s working women.  This multipurpose wrap dress worked as not only a comfortable business wear, but also as a graceful evening gown. In the 70s Diane Von Furstenberg Dresses eventually became a prominent fashion statement for women.

The inspiration behind the wrap dress

Any American lady who is fashion conscious will have at least one wrap dress of Diane Von Furstenberg in her wardrobe.  But they might not know that this wrap dress is actually an inspiration of Diane’s divorce. In 1972, when she had undergone the divorce with Prince Egon v Furstenberg, she did not ask for any alimony. Instead she decided to self support herself. This is when she introduced this legendary wrap dress.

Rising popularity of DvF costumes

She re-launched her fashion designing company in ’97, by re-introducing the iconic wrap dress. The company has gained global recognition which now offers 4 collections of Diane Von Furstenberg Dresses in a year. This brand is now available in more than 70 countries, with its headquarters located in Manhattan. She was bestowed with the award of Lifetime Achievement in the year 2005. Her clothes are worn by celebrities like Madonna, Jennifer Lopez, Michelle Obama and many more.

How to be aware of fake DvF costumes?

There are a number of fake DvF costumes which are sold online. So you should be very careful while purchasing one. Here are some of the points you should note while making an online purchase, because the fake dresses usually have the following defects:

  1. Large prints
  2. Wrong cuts
  3. Cheap fabric
  4. Wrong necklines
  5. Misprinted tags
  6. Hems and edges are not properly finished
  7. Material used is different
  8. The inner lining is not properly attached.
  9. Plastic buttons used instead of metal ones.
  10. Improper fittings

Case Study:

“I am a big fan of DvF which makes a woman look simply elegant. But unfortunately there is no DvF store in San Francisco so I used to purchase them online. So recently I started acquiring the dresses from a new online store. Thanks a lot to your article, where I came to know about the fake dresses that are being sold in such online stores. I was totally unaware of this fact. Hence, from now onwards before making any online purchase of Diane Von Furstenberg Dresses I will check on all the parameters that you have mentioned in this article or rather try to acquire it from an authentic DvF store.”- Glenda T, California, USA

Stunning Jewelry for Gorgeous Women

Posted on June 14, 2013 by Toast Pop Posted in Style .

Stunning Jewelry for Gorgeous WomenNot too long ago, trying to locate a store that sells plus size jewelry was almost an exercise in futility, particularly since the majority of jewelry stores only carry stock in the popular sizes of 9, 8 and possibly 7 and larger sizes would require a special order.  In addition, this frequently applies only to rings; bangles and bracelets can be even more challenging to buy in extended sizes, unless the style allows for a simple addition of extension chain links to achieve a bigger fit.

Fortunately, an increasing number of plus size clothing stores now offer jewelry in bigger sizes and these specialized pieces of jewelry are available in even higher volume from online vendors.  These vendors supply a wide assortment of jewelry for plus size ladies, who are seeking to accessorize their favorite clothing.

Adjustable rings have been gaining popularity over the past few years because they provide a custom-fit that allows them to expand to larger sizes. Unfortunately, anything over a size 10 and these adjustable rings could start digging into the flesh and the spectrum of wearable ring sizes on each piece significantly varies.  These rings are available nationwide and it is highly recommended that they are tried on in the store before completing the purchase, particularly for ladies who require larger sizes.  It gets a bit trickier when these rings are purchase online; however if the ring size is known, most websites facilitate searches by ring sizes.

There are a number of National chains that carry plus size clothing and they continuously expand their jewelry line to meet the needs of the plus size market.  Similar to the smaller sizes, these larger jewelry pieces are frequently updated to keep up with the seasonal trends but there are always classic pieces available, which are timeless and always in style.

There are many different styles of jewelry available in this niche and there is a collection of vendors who offer handmade and usually one-of-a-kind jewelry items that are crafted with intricate and exquisite detail.  They always have beautiful collections of jewelry with plus size options that can be used to complete the look of any outfit.

With this wide assortment of plus size fashion and jewelry pieces getting larger each and every season, there are numerous ways in which the pieces can be obtained by all the fashion forward curvy ladies, who know how attract the right attention and look amazing while doing so.  The availability of these items of jewelry in extended sizes makes it a whole lot easier to stay ahead of the fashion game, with the popular trends and breath-taking statement pieces, all in popular brands and styles.

The evolution of jewelry offered to this particular niche market has revolutionized the fashion industry, by putting an end to the myth that beauty can only be attributed to women of a certain size.  The confidence level of the plus size population has been boosted by these jewelry pieces and there is nothing more beautiful than a confident woman, regardless of her size.
