The Best Museums in London (max spend $15)

The Best Museums in London (max spend $15)As we all know, summer in the UK can be unpredictable. One day it is gloriously sunny and warm, and the next we’re being battered by gale force winds and lashed by driving rain. So, if we can’t predict the weather, we need a contingency plan for when the weather takes a downward turn. London is great in the summer, but it won’t always feel very summery, so why not take the opportunity to spend some time exploring its fascinating museums?

If you live in London, it’s easy enough to hop on the Tube or the bus to get around, but if you live outside London, it might be worth hiring a coach with friends to save you all money on extortionate train tickets. The museums aren’t all situated in the same spots, so although many of them are free, you’ll need a little money to pay for transport costs across the city.

If you’re short on time, three of the best museums are situated next to one another and can be accessed directly from South Kensington Station. The Science Museum is popular with adults and children alike, with lots of interactive games and exhibits, and there is a great blend of technology, human biology and modern and historical science. The Natural History Museum has an impressive array of dinosaur skeletons, crystals and fossils, and the V&A is dedicated to design, furniture, fashion and art from years gone by.

London is famous for its art galleries. The Tate is in Vauxhall, and displays a fantastic array of classical and contemporary art. There is a series of video installations and sculptures to enjoy, and you can easily spend an entire afternoon exploring the galleries. The Tate Modern resides in an interesting industrial building with twin chimneys, and is often home to some of the most controversial works in the country, so head along if you fancy a debate.

The British Museum is a striking neo-classical Palladian building with iconic columns, and houses one of the world’s most talked about aspects of art, the Elgin Marbles, which were brought to the UK from Greece and have lived here ever since. There are sections dedicated to each of the major historical cultures and periods, such as the Egyptians, Oriental art and the Romans, and provides a comprehensive history on the world under one roof, so is ideal for any history buffs who want to pick up a good grounding in almost any part of history or historical culture.

Winter Illuminations–Japan’s Best

Posted on November 11, 2012 by kejohns323 Posted in Art .

Extravagant light displays are wonderful traditions and attractions in America. Las Vegas is known for being as luminous as daytime in the dark of night. Disney World goes all out with brilliant displays and shows in their nightly parades before closing. New York City brightly trims the giant tree in Rockefeller Plaza, and dazzles the masses each year with glittering, glowing ball that drops in Times Square every New Year’s celebration. Radiant rituals like these seem to be just as typical overseas. Particularly over in Japan with their new Winter Illuminations event!

Winter Illuminations just opened at the botanical garden, Nabana no Sato, which is located on the island of Nagashima in Kuwana. Already it has been called one of the best light shows in Japan! Viewers walking through at night are enveloped by millions of LED lights which are strung across the grounds and even on the water. Embracing a nature theme this year, gorgeous scenes of rainbows, auras and even a sunrise over Mount Fuji are simulated. This most stunning light display is operating until March 31st, 2013.

There are a ton of lively light displays to see and experience here and abroad! If you’re not fortunate to see Winter Illuminations for yourself, at least the photos found here can give you a taste of Japan’s best!

The State of Vacation Blog

So I took a break from the interwebs this past weekend to vacation with my family and friends around Washington DC. It was my last summertime hurrah before I return to school, and I left having a pleasant experience!

The early daytime weather was quite kind to us as we spent part of our day wandering the National Zoo (just after a Starbucks treat from across the street!) The zoo is free of charge, and was very delightful and interesting! Attempting to spot the shy or less than sociable animals hiding in the enclosures is part of the fun! Speaking of which, if you’re looking for the Giant Pandas after 2:30pm, they get put in the indoor enclosures for the day, which are quite informative on their lives. What was more interesting though was my visit with the great cats. The lions and tigers were quite vocal when I saw them. It was as if they were yelling at each other from across the barriers that separate them.

After the Zoo, we had lunch at a neat place called Noodles and Company, right across from the metro station. The restaurant’s specialty is, of course, noodle dishes of Asian, Mediterranean, and even American cuisine for around $8 (USD). From there we hopped on the metro to do some sight-seeing. We walked by Ford’s Theatre and the place where President Lincoln died— probably would’ve gone in for the tours if we had tickets. Then, we trekked up Pennsylvania Avenue—passing the Navy Memorial—and wound up at Madame Tussads. Just before my family entered the attraction, two busloads of Japanese tourists unloaded in front of us. So my first visit to the famous wax museum chain started off a little crowded as they took advantage of photo opportunities every step of the way, but it was still neat nonetheless.

Some friends we visited while there suggested a

place in Reston called Big Bowl for dinner. Another great place for Asian cuisine, this place has a special stir fry buffet where you can select the rice, vegetables, protein, and sauce you want. Jasmine rice is best selection if you want to eat with chopsticks.

I just wish we had more time to spend there. There’s so much to do and see that you just can’t quite fit into a day if sightseeing isn’t a priority. I had a great time regardless. It was good seeing my family friends again. I would love to go again for more sightseeing given the opportunity!
