The Lizzie Bennet Diaries: Pride and Prejudice Meets the Present

Posted on May 25, 2013 by kejohns323 Posted in Books, Pop Culture .

Lizzie Bennet Logo“It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.” This is the line that begins the timeless Jane Austen classic Pride and Prejudice. Most literary critics would think of this line as a reflection (or a satire) upon relational values of Jane Austen’s time and place in history, but to the average reader, it sets the premise of the love story it is today known to be. However you read Jane Austen, this year celebrates two hundred years of existence for Pride and Prejudice. Perhaps it’s a truth universally acknowledged now that a lot has changed in society since Austen wrote it. Being so far removed from Austen’s time in this day and age certainly puts a damper on fully understanding this beloved classic, but The Lizzie Bennet Diaries brings it all to the twenty-first century.

The Lizzie Bennet Diaries portrays the Austen classic in a very contemporary way, and still remains true to the tale. It is a one hundred episode blog series on Youtube that is hosted by the headstrong, independent Lizzie Bennet. In each short episode she unfolds a dramatic scene from Pride and Prejudice with her intelligent best friend, Charlotte Wu; her perfect sister, Jane; their wild-child sister, Lydia; their restless, southern-bell mother and aloof father; the rich and sweet Dr. Bing Li, and many other characters from the novel. Whether you’re a fan of Jane Austen, or you’re trying to understand what’s going on in Pride and Prejudice, it is fun, enjoyable, and easy for anyone to follow. The modern aspect is a big help in understanding the plot and dated references.

Though rich, single men may not always be seeking marriage these days; nor might unusual women be anxious to snatch them up, The Lizzie Bennet Diaries bridges the two century time span to enlighten and entertain students and lovers of classic literature. All the modern aspects of the series, like the web-blogging medium, the colorful characters, and the pop culture craving for drama, are tuned to reflect the classic novel, which makes great entertainment for the literary enthusiast, a wonderful supplement or resource for studying Pride and Prejudice. The Lizzie Bennet Diaries introduces the classic to modern times.

The Fault in Our Stars by John Green Book Review

Posted on March 8, 2013 by Mackenzie Lynd Posted in Books .

The Fault in Our StarsHazel has cancer. Augustus has cancer too. Different kinds, different severities, but somehow they find themselves at the literal heart of Jesus Christ together. After this Cancer support group they are sent into a great journey with each other. Whether it is bonding over a novel that has no true end and looking for answers for it or debating about nonsmoking smokers this novel keeps you enthralled. A book like this doesn’t need action scenes to make it a good book. It is just an amazing book on its own. This book is perfect the way it is. It is a story deserves and wants to be told. Though it may be fiction I am sure you will find something real and true to take out of it.

I usually find it quite easy to share my opinions on a book and am able to review it with ease as well. Let’s just say this is so not the case with this review. The Fault in Our Stars by John Green is not a book that is easily reviewed, mainly because you feel as if no words are adequate enough to fully explain the greatness of this book. It makes you feel the feels. I mean one moment you are laughing at something completely cynical and hilarious that Hazel and Augustus seem to just exude and the next moment you’re not sure if you will ever stop crying. I have tried my best to explain my love for this book though I am afraid the words I want to use do not exist or at least I have not found ones that suite what I truly want to say. Trust me on this one, it’s a great book and a journey you want to read and experience for sure. If you hadn’t already guessed I gave this book 5/5 star.

Summertime is here! And summer means vacation time! Hit the road with these awesome summer songs!

“Vacation” by the Go Go’s—All we ever want is vacation, right? This is the season’s theme song! $1.29 (USD) on iTunes.

“Life is a Highway” by Tom Cochrane—Rascal Flatts covered this song, but I really enjoy the original! This is the song to crank on the open road. The original is $1.29 (USD) on iTunes. The Rascal Flatts cover is a cheap $.69 (USD) from the Cars soundtrack.

“Higitus Figitus” from Disney’s Sword in the Stone—Annoyed with overstuffed suitcases? Singing along with this song probably won’t minimize the size the size of your luggage, but it’s still a fun one for when you’re packing. Download a free MP3 of this song from here. No additional downloading or installments necessary as far as I can tell.

“Kokomo” by the Beach Boys—No better jam for hitting the Gulf, the Keys, or whatever your tropical destination might be. $.99 (USD) on iTunes.

“Chillin’ in the Summertime” and “Summer Rain” by the Jonas Brothers—Rain or shine, the JoBros have the tunes for enjoying the day! Both tracks are $1.29 (USD) on iTunes.

Simon’s Cat–Amazing Youtube Sensation!

Posted on June 1, 2012 by kejohns323 Posted in Art, Pop Culture .

Cats are interesting, adorable pets and Simon’s Cat cartoon mini-series brings out the humor in typical feline antics. The cartoon shorts are full of good comedy and are simplistic in style. Simon Tofield, the artist behind Simon’s Cat, makes extensive use of soft, curved lines, and the pictures are black and white. The films themselves are made using Adobe Flash software, but Tofield makes the effort to design them using frame-to-frame, hand-drawn animation. Usually it takes him between twelve to twenty-five drawings to create one second of a film clip but that kind of dedication is something to appreciate in today’s world of digitized, computer-animated immersion! Tofield also provides the character voices and noises that are heard in a typical animation piece. The storylines are inspired Tolfield’s own four cats.

Simon's Cat

You’ll fall in love with Simon’s Cat! And when that happens, check out his website to find all of Simon’s Cats films, buy merchandise, and more! Follow Simon’s Cat on Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, and even Google+. If you have an iPhone or iOS device, you should download Simon’s Cat’s fun gaming apps, one of them based off one of the videos. (An app for Android, Blackberry, and Windows devices should be available soon.)

The traditional animation style, the humor and personality of the characters, the relatable situations, the fact that it’s the most popular pet in the U.S.…there’s something everyone will love about this delightful Youtube sensation!

Karmin Crash Your Party

Posted on January 1, 2012 by James Agee Posted in Music .

It’s always great to see talented people get recognition, and that is why it is so great to see the online YouTube sensation, Karmin, finally get the credit that they deserve. This duo began showing off their musical talents through YouTube videos, and their obvious musical gifts were easily recognized and they now boast a hit single, Crash Your Party, which is available on iTunes, as well as a fast paced music video to accompany the song.

Nick an Amy are the two that make the music possible. Their single has even been featured recently on Amazon as the hit song of the day. They met each other while attending college and began writing music together and collaborating, and well, the rest is history! Most of their early music that they showed off online were covers of popular pop songs. With a huge fan base that is ever growing and a promising career in the music industry, you are sure to hear a lot more from Karmin in the near future.

Youtopia

Posted on November 29, 2011 by James Agee Posted in Music .

So you’ve all herd of Owl City, I’m quite sure you have. Did you know that he has a few singles out there that somehow have slid under the radar? Ah, you should’ve known that! For a while now the song Youtopia by Adam Young from Owl City and musically adapt Armin van Buuren has been blasting it’s way across the internet, but never given much attention. Well, now there is an oficial music video for it that features none other than Adam himself! It’s rare for a single this unknown to get a music video, much a legit one with the artist himself featured in it.

Now, I’m not quite sure what is going on in the video, obviously she is recreating memories of a love she has lost, but at times it comes off a little creepy. Watch it and you will know what I mean. The romance scenes seem a tad rehearsed and fake, but hey, Adam is a musician, not an actor! The girl however, she could do better and to my knowledge she is an actress. For example, notice when she wakes up towards the end…she just pops her eyes open! Normally, to seem less scripted, one would expect a slow opening of the eyes for a more dramatic realization that reality has sunk in. Anyway, we liked the video, watch and determine for yourself!

Cannon PowerShot ELPH 300HS

Posted on November 27, 2011 by James Agee Posted in Tech .

Looking for a good camera to buy as a gift for someone? We can’t help you with that, what we can do is help you find an amazing camera! It may be for you, a gift, or whatever, but this camera is quite impressive! I have used this camera for about five months now and I honestly have to admit that the quality is second to none and the video shooting is true HD meaning that it seriously looks great! I bought this camera because I needed a good camera to make YouTube videos with and it helps that it is not only a superb camera but also a very impressive video camera!

There are three colors in the 300HS version, and I went with red. When you see a red camera it is unmistakable that it is a Cannon PowerShot! The color is vibrant and the texture is perfect for holding. The only complaint that I have is my Micro SDHC memory card is sometimes not readable, but this is easily fixed by turning the camera off then back on. I am almost certain that this is due to the memory card itself and not the camera, either way it is a small price to pay for the quality that this camera outputs! Oh, and just in case you are wondering, this is the camera that many YouTubers use such as CTFxC and other prominent video bloggers (for those of you interested in making YouTube videos).
